Introduction
OpenSFDR is an open protocol and standard for sharing SFDR data between investors, portfolio companies, and software providers.
What is OpenSFDR?
OpenSFDR is an open protocol for sharing data required under the Sustainable Finance Disclosure Regulation (SFDR) — the EU regulation that governs how financial products disclose their sustainability impact.
Just like SWIFT standardizes payment instructions between banks, or SMTP is the protocol behind every email, OpenSFDR standardizes how SFDR-related data flows between investors, portfolio companies, and other stakeholders. Before OpenSFDR, this data was exchanged through emails, spreadsheets, and meetings — with no shared format and no audit trail.
OpenSFDR replaces that friction with a single, shared platform where fund managers define their ESG strategies, portfolio companies report their data, and everyone works from the same source of truth.
Who is it for?
OpenSFDR is designed for private market participants who need to comply with SFDR but don't want a large, complex setup that requires a dedicated team to operate.
- Fund managers define ESG strategies for their funds and collect sustainability data from portfolio companies. They use OpenSFDR to screen new investments, monitor existing holdings, and generate SFDR-compliant reports.
- Portfolio companies receive clear guidance on what data is needed, in what format, and by when. They have their own secure workspace and are guided through the data collection process.
- Auditors and advisors can connect to a fund manager's account to review data, verify aggregation logic, and understand reporting outputs — without receiving files over email.
- Software providers integrate OpenSFDR's API to offer SFDR management from within their own platforms.
OpenSFDR works best when you invest in private markets where public ESG data isn't available, and when you have direct access to your portfolio companies. If you invest primarily in publicly traded instruments, other solutions may be a better fit.
Why OpenSFDR?
A protocol for collaboration
SFDR management is fundamentally a data-sharing challenge. LPs set ESG strategies that GPs must implement. GPs need to communicate those strategies to their portfolio companies. Portfolio companies measure and report their data back. The GP aggregates it at fund level and reports to the LP. Auditors, advisors, and other parties may also need access along the way.
OpenSFDR turns this multi-party coordination into a structured workflow. When you connect with another organization on OpenSFDR, collaboration happens immediately:
- Investors can share ESG strategies with portfolio companies and track data collection progress in real time.
- Portfolio companies can self-report autonomously, or fund managers can manage reporting on their behalf.
- LPs can connect for free and see your financial products and ESG performance directly — no manual report distribution needed.
- External advisors can be connected to set up your system or manage ESG operations alongside your team.
You can have up to 20 users per organization, and each connected party only sees what they're authorized to access.
| Scenario | Without OpenSFDR | With OpenSFDR |
|---|---|---|
| New LP requires you to implement their ESG strategy | Manually interpret their requirements, adjust templates, re-brief every portfolio company on new formats and timeframes | Import or align the strategy on the platform; portfolio companies see updated requirements automatically |
| New portfolio company needs to understand your data requirements | They receive spreadsheets with little context; no time to research indicator definitions | They log in and see exactly what's needed, with definitions and guidance built in |
| Auditor wants to verify your data | Send individual files; they reconstruct your aggregation logic manually | They connect to your account and see all funds, data sources, and calculations directly |
| Portfolio company exits and is refinanced by another investor | ESG data is effectively lost; the company starts from scratch with the new investor | Data is portable — export it in a structured format, or the new investor connects directly |
| LP wants to understand your ESG data | You compile a custom report and send it manually | They connect to your account and explore your fund's strategy and data in real time |
A standard that handles the hard parts
The SFDR legal text leaves many practical questions unanswered. How do you handle missing data? What about estimated or simulated figures? What if a portfolio company can't report a specific indicator for structural reasons — for example, employee count for a real estate asset? How do you deal with currency conversions or significant changes in enterprise value during a holding period?
OpenSFDR answers these questions out of the box. It applies the correct formulas and follows EU recommendations for aggregating sustainability data at fund level. It tracks data quality — coverage rates, simulation percentages, structural exclusions — so your reporting is transparent and defensible.
Rather than storing raw numbers and leaving the calculations to you, OpenSFDR handles the complexity of real-world SFDR data: partial data, edge cases, and all.
Built to save time and give insights
OpenSFDR goes beyond data collection and storage. Its reporting engine produces detailed breakdowns of how your sustainability data has evolved, aligned with SFDR reporting obligations. Instead of handing stakeholders a number they can't interpret, you give them rich, contextualized information they can actually understand.
The platform is available through three interfaces, depending on how you prefer to work:
App — A clean web interface for managing your funds, data, and reports.

AI agents — A chat-based interface where you can type what you want to do and be guided through the process.

API — A REST API for software providers who want to integrate SFDR management into their own products. Detailed OpenAPI documentation is available upon request.

Focused by design
OpenSFDR does one thing and does it well: SFDR data sharing and reporting for private markets.
Your portfolio companies are free to use whatever internal ESG management tools work best for them — whether that's a corporate sustainability platform, a real estate-specific solution, or something else entirely. OpenSFDR is simply the layer where they communicate that data to you in a structured, standardized way. It's lightweight for them and powerful for you.
The platform is openly accessible — no lengthy contract negotiations required — and your data stays yours. OpenSFDR does not use your data for training models or developing proprietary benchmarks.
Who is behind OpenSFDR?
OpenSFDR is built by a team of developers with hands-on experience in fund management, based in Zug, Switzerland. We built OpenSFDR because SFDR compliance takes up far too much time when there's no shared standard — and we believe fixing that promotes a more level playing field in international finance.
